another vista won t boot

Another "Vista won't boot" problem

Installed from XP Pro to a clean drive, XP is on a SCSI, Vista on an IDE. Install worked fine, I Customized some of the settings while Vista was downloading updates. It then told me updates were installed and to reboot, which I did. Cannot get into Vista no way no how. Hangs at 'Windows 2006" black screen and hdd is making a rhythmic clunking sound each time I try to get into Vista. Does the same kind of hang if I use the DVD to boot. I never get an option screen for repair with DVD boot. I can boot to XP just fine. I looked for log files and none of them tell me what is hanging up the Vista boot. I have looked for help in the postings but nothing I have tried works. Any idea what the problem is?
Thank you.

Ok, I'll answer my own post.....
I see that in order to get a startup repair option I must order the Vista DVD from MS. I may or may not do this....
And
I see that nothing except a reformat will remove the Vista boot mgr from my XP drive. I can restore an image so I'm ok there.
What I would really like is for Vista to work and I just don't see any info on this boot problem and I am not the only one to have it. Yikes, it is horrible to think that a beta release can be so problematic, does not bode well for this customer upgrading to a new OS just to get a new UI. And I am lucky because I have a PC (a recycled IBM Workstation on which XP just rocks, after severe pruning) that passes the Vista Upgrade advisor tests....
Gosh, it was dumb of me to think I would be helping MS produce a good product by becoming a beta tester when I cannot get the darn thing to work past a reboot from installation of Vista Windows Updates (which by the way, if I am reading the logs correctly, installations of which ALL failed, WTH????)
I'll
keep reading and see if I can get a clue to this problem while I wait for a reply.

Burn the DVD again to get a DVD that will give you access to Win RE's components. Check it's integrity with the CRC tool:
The CRC utility for Beta 2 is contained here (Scroll down to the bottom under "Additional Information"
Microsoft® Windows® Software Development Kit (SDK) for Beta 2 of Windows Vista and WinFX Runtime Components
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=13F8E273-F5EA-4B7B-B022-97755838DB94&displaylang=en
Additional Information To verify that your download of an ISO file for the Windows SDK Beta 2 build is not corrupt, download the CRC Utility. (Note: this is not a Microsoft application. Use at your own risk.)
To run the CRC test, open a command prompt and run the utility. providing it the name of the file (i.e. crc c:\6.0.5383.1.1.WindowsSDK_Vista_idw.DVD.Rel.img) The CRC utility will run two tests on the ISO: it will verify if the ISO is valid, and it will give the AutoCRC signature for the file. The AutoCRC signature for the Windows SDK Beta 2 ISO is 0x28434EEF. You should also confirm the size of the ISO is correct: 1.14 GB (1,229,355,008 bytes).
If it fails any of these three tests, re-download the ISO.
I really like the direct link to it though if you right click CRC here>left click Properties:
http://tacobell.iexbeta.com/longhorn/crc.exe
Also although you correctly loaded the older OS first, you might get some help from these cmds in this MSKB:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919529/en-us
Additionally you may get help from this and fix your Vista boot loader:
Easy BCD 1.1

Good

Hi Chad, thanks for the reply, I had given up on Vista and trying to get help on the boards.
If the download was corrupt, why did I get a working OS which downloaded winupdates, allowed me to configure settings, look around a bit, etc. and ONLY failed after rebooting????
I think that the RE tool is only available on the DVD's provided by Microsoft, not in the web download, so they were not available to me at any time. Read that somewhere on the boards.
I now have a DVD from Microsoft, have reformatted my computer and gotten my XP Pro back, and have a spare comp for Vista only. To tell you the truth, I don't really see myself switching as the whole deal leaf a bad taste in my mouth. No access to quick help when problems arise is the main thing, waiting for almost 3 weeks for 1 reply won't cut it. I can see how much noise there is on the boards from people who really should not be testing this beta.....
Thanks
again for the reply!
